A Personal Retrospective: Empathy, Joy, and Humor

In this captivating retrospective, we invite you to dive into three exciting stories that span from deep empathy to overflowing joy and contagious humor. Let’s explore significant moments from the life of Dr. Susan J. Baumgaertel, where she reveals experiences that have left indelible marks and valuable lessons.

In the first part, “Empathy,” Dr. Baumgaertel transports us to a snowy day in Seattle. Picture yourself driving on slippery streets and coming across a homeless man holding a sign amidst a storm. Our brave protagonist, in her role as a doctor, decides to help this man struggling in the extreme cold. And boy, does it move her! As she hands him some money, their hands briefly touch. This small gesture triggers an avalanche of emotions and reflections in Dr. Baumgaertel. What goes through the mind of someone in such desperate situations? Empathy becomes a driving force in her life, reminding us of the importance of helping those in need.

In the second part, “Joy,” Dr. Baumgaertel presents a moment of pure happiness. It turns out her daughter is an officer in the United States Navy, and during the holiday season, she manages to bring her home. It’s an epic accomplishment! Imagine the excitement of preparing for her arrival, decorating the house, and eagerly anticipating her return. But here comes the best part: her daughter decides to surprise them and arrive two days earlier than planned. It’s like a gift wrapped in joy! Tears of happiness flow as mother and daughter embrace tightly. It’s a moment that will be etched in their memories, a testament to the love and connection they share.

Now, the third part, “Humor.” In this final section, Dr. Baumgaertel shows us her funnier side and shares the amusing coincidences she encounters in her daily life. From nicknames like “Dr. B” to extravagant names for her car and cat, there are no limits to the laughter. You’ll even discover that she has a spider in her garage named Brad. Who would have thought a spider would earn a name? Life is full of surprises!

But what makes this retrospective so special? It’s the way Dr. Baumgaertel invites us to reflect on our own emotions and experiences. She shows us how empathy can make a difference in others’ lives, how joy can arise from the most unexpected moments, and how humor can brighten even the gloomiest days.
