Dr. Robert Saul: From Pediatrician to Committed Writer for Children

Pediatrics is an amazing medical specialty with enduring impacts on doctors, patients, and their families. Dr. Robert Saul has experienced the tremendous influence firsthand. As a pediatrician, he feels a tremendous responsibility towards children and their families, and his practice has transformed his life in many ways. Through listening, diagnosing, providing care, and empathizing, he has gained the trust of parents and formed strong partnerships with families.

Initially, Dr. Saul found it presumptuous when fellow pediatricians referred to their patients as “my children”. Parents seek medical care for their children, not to hand over total control. However, he came to understand the sentiment behind this expression. A truly committed pediatrician invests physical, mental, and emotional energy in their patients’ care. For them, patients become like “their children”. As these children grow and form families of their own, pediatricians have the privilege of remaining part of their lives and and often providing medical care for the next generation. The pride in this ongoing relationship rivals that of grandparents for their grandchildren.

His goal is to leave a legacy of thoughts and suggestions that have a lasting positive impact on the lives of children and their families. His books are intended for various audiences that hold a special place in his heart.

First and foremost, his books are for his own children. As his two children have grown into compassionate adults committed to others, Dr. Saul takes great pride in their empathy and  understanding of their responsibilities to help others.  He hopes his books can convey even more valuable teachings to them and guide them in their quest to make the world a better place.

His granddaughters, the daughters of his children, are another audience he wishes to reach. Dr. Saul hopes these young ladies will follow in their parents’ footsteps, continuing the legacy of compassion and assistance. As a grandfather, he feels honored to inspire and support their growth and development.

However, his books are not limited to his family alone. They are also directed at his patients, whom he considers as his own children. Parents entrust pediatricians with the care of their beloved ones, and pediatricians provide the same level of attention and care as they would for their own children. Dr. Saul has always treated his patients as he would want his own children to be treated, both medically and emotionally. Therefore, it is not surprising that his writings are dedicated to his patients and the future children of his patients. He hopes his books will offer guidance and support in the years to come.

Dr. Saul’s dedication does not end there. Throughout his career, he has assumed multiple roles: a pediatrician committed to medical excellence, an enthusiastic medical geneticist excited about clinical genetics, a community advocate, and an educator in genetics for other pediatricians. He has provided administrative support to fellow dedicated pediatricians in their training and directly cared for children with complex medical needs. Over time, he has realized that advocating for children and improving the community is an ongoing responsibility. Driven by this conviction, his books also aim to support and nurture all children, beyond those under his direct care. He considers them as “the children of his children”—children and their future generations.

Dr. Saul also acknowledges the profound impact of his mother on his motivation and success. Despite the challenges she faced, she devoted herself to raising her two children and caring deeply for others. Committed to her community, she strived to make a difference in the lives of those around her. Dr. Saul hopes that the values he upholds in his books reflect those his mother instilled in him. And he hopes that those values can make a lasting difference in the lives of the children and families who read his books.

In a nutshell, Dr. Robert Saul, a passionate and committed pediatrician, has embarked on writing books to leave a legacy of thoughts and suggestions that create a lasting positive impact. His writings are intended for his own children, his patients, and the future children of his patients. Furthermore, they are also meant for all children, as Dr. Saul sees himself as their advocate. Inspired by his mother, he hopes his books convey positive values and make a difference in the lives of children and their families.
