Lily Kak is a watercolor artist who was born and raised in India. Advised by her parents to get a "proper degree" to avoid being a starving artist, she traveled to the United States to get her PhD and subsequently became an international development expert in the field of public health. Having fulfilled the requirements of earning a "proper degree," Lily has continued to study, learn, and improve her skills in art. Her profession has provided her with the opportunity of traveling extensively to Asian and African countries, encouraging her to celebrate and respect the vibrant and diverse cultures that she has experienced during her travels. Her watercolors combine a controlled representational style while embracing the unexpected loose characteristics so unique to the watercolor medium. Her recent approach of combining watercolor with collage has expanded her art to the limitless possibilities of mixed media and collage textures. She is grateful to Nicky Chandam of Manipur and Beverly Tilung Marbaniang of Meghalaya for generously sharing their reference photographs for some of her paintings from North-East India.
Lily has exhibited her art in several juried shows and has won multiple awards. She is a Signature Artist of the Baltimore Watercolor Society and of the Potomac Valley Watercolor Society. She is also a member of the Montgomery Art Association and Rockville Art League.
