Changing the Course of Chronic Wounds: A Conversation with Dr. Desmond Bell

In a world where health care is often fragmented and patients can fall through the cracks, one doctor is on a mission to save lives by preventing unnecessary amputations—and it all starts with better wound care. Dr. Desmond Bell, founder of the Save a Leg, Save a Life Foundation, is helping to reduce amputation rates by raising awareness about peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and chronic wounds, conditions that affect millions of people worldwide.

In a 2020 episode of the RX for Success podcast, Dr. Bell shared his journey from a small group of health care professionals in Jacksonville to the founder of a nonprofit organization that’s saving lives and improving quality of life. His dedication to addressing the root causes of chronic wounds, like PAD, and his tireless efforts to educate patients and providers alike are making a significant impact in the world of wound care.

Dr. Bell’s work began with a simple but powerful realization: many of the amputations he saw could have been prevented with earlier intervention. This led him to form a group in Jacksonville aimed at addressing the issue, and over time, that group grew into a nationwide initiative. By focusing on wound care education and connecting professionals from various disciplines—including vascular surgeons, podiatrists, and even medical device companies—Dr. Bell’s organization began seeing results. Amputation rates in Jacksonville started to drop, and what began as a local effort eventually grew into a global one.

A key turning point for the organization came when Dr. Bell recognized the power of social media to spread awareness. No longer confined to small, local educational meetings, the Save a Leg, Save a Life Foundation leveraged the reach of platforms like Facebook and Instagram to make waves across the globe. They even created a campaign to raise awareness of PAD—The White Sock Campaign—which encourages people to wear one white sock and share photos to raise awareness of the condition. The campaign has exploded, with participants from all over the world helping spread the message.

Beyond education, Dr. Bell and his team are addressing the financial and logistical barriers many patients face in accessing proper care. Many of the people affected by diabetes, a major contributor to PAD, lack the resources to get proper diabetic shoes, which can significantly reduce the risk of complications. Through their philanthropic efforts, the Save a Leg, Save a Life Foundation is working to provide these crucial supplies to underserved patients across the country.

But Dr. Bell’s journey doesn’t stop with wound care. He explains that as he prepares to transition out of his patient care practice, he’s embarking on a new chapter—one that will allow him to mentor and coach other healthcare providers. This shift comes as a response to the overwhelming administrative burden that has shifted the focus away from patient care in recent years. Now, Dr. Bell is leveraging his experience and passion for mentorship in the coaching world, aiming to help other doctors navigate the challenges of modern medicine.

As if that wasn’t enough, Dr. Bell is also serving as the Chief Medical Officer for Omesa, a company focused on groundbreaking wound care products. The company’s technology, which uses omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil to disrupt harmful biofilms in chronic wounds, is a game changer for the industry. Dr. Bell’s story is proof that by staying open to new opportunities and collaborations, unexpected but impactful outcomes can unfold.

Dr. Bell’s personal philosophy centers on the importance of mentorship, lifelong learning, and giving back. As he shares in the podcast, one of Winston Churchill’s most famous quotes is, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” His journey is a testament to the power of giving, whether that’s through educating others, innovating in healthcare, or simply offering a helping hand to those in need.
