Dr. Uchenna Umeh: Advocating for Change and Transforming Lives
In an eye-opening and inspiring episode of the Rx for Success Podcast, well-regarded general and vascular surgeon, and former radio personality Dr. Randy Cook, welcomes Dr. Uchenna “Dr. Lulu” Umeh, a renowned pediatrician, queer activist, and advocate for LGBTQ+ youth. This episode is an exceptional opportunity to hear Dr. Lulu’s powerful perspective on allyship, the affirmation of gender-diverse children, and her personal journey navigating the complexities of being a mom to a transgender daughter.
Dr. Lulu’s story begins in Nigeria, where she grew up in a strict, patriarchal society that had clear expectations for women. Raised in a household where education and discipline were priorities, Dr. Lulu was expected to conform to cultural norms. But from a young age, she displayed a sense of independence and a refusal to accept limitations based on her gender or identity. On the podcast, she shares how her upbringing instilled both resilience and compassion—qualities that now fuel her advocacy work.
As a queer woman of faith, Dr. Lulu reflects on her journey to self-acceptance, navigating the often-complex intersection of her Nigerian heritage, religious upbringing, and queer identity. These early experiences shaped her empathetic approach to supporting marginalized communities, particularly Black gender-diverse youth.
Her professional life is equally inspiring. After earning her medical degree, Dr. Lulu joined the United States Air Force, serving as a Lieutenant Colonel and later as a pediatrician. As a disabled veteran and single mother of three, she brings a unique perspective to her work, especially in navigating the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth.
A pivotal moment in her life—and in this podcast episode—is when Dr. Lulu discusses the experience of raising her transgender daughter. This deeply personal journey transformed her into a fierce advocate for LGBTQ+ children and their families, driving her to establish Dr. Lulu’s PRIDE Corner, a gender-affirming coaching and consulting practice.
Dr. Lulu’s story doesn’t end with her family. In the episode, she delves into her broader advocacy mission, emphasizing the importance of allyship in healthcare, parenting, and society. She speaks candidly about the stigmas that persist within communities of color and how they disproportionately impact LGBTQ+ youth. She stresses that allyship starts with understanding, listening, and creating environments where children feel safe, loved, and accepted.
Her advocacy extends beyond her practice. Dr. Lulu is a three-time TEDx speaker, corporate consultant, and adjunct professor. Her nonprofit organization focuses on mentorship and providing affirming homes for unhoused LGBTQ+ youth, addressing one of the most pressing issues faced by gender-diverse children.
Additionally, her numerous accomplishments reflect her dedication to youth advocacy. Dr. Lulu was named the 2021 San Antonio LGBT Chamber Youth Advocate of the Year, a 2022 honoree by the San Antonio Business Journal for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and was recognized as a finalist for the San Antonio National Association of Women Business Owners’ Rising Star Award in 2023. In August 2024, she received the prestigious Pioneer of the Year award at the Trans Life Awards in Atlanta, GA. Beyond these accolades, Dr. Lulu’s voice has been featured on CBS This Morning and The Life You Want Masterclass with Oprah Winfrey, amplifying her message to a national audience.
Her published works, including A Teen’s Life and How to Teach Your Children About Racism, demonstrate her commitment to spreading knowledge and creating spaces for meaningful conversations about inclusivity. Her upcoming books, Invited In, How to Become the Parent Your LGBTQ+ Child Needs, About Your Black Transgender Child, and Allies in White Coats: LGBTQ+ Basics for Physicians, will offer even more resources for those committed to supporting and affirming gender-diverse youth.
Dr. Lulu recently launched a paid membership community, ACCEPTED & AFFIRMED, designed to help parents, allies, and queer individuals find support, guidance, and camaraderie as they navigate their LGBTQ+ journeys. This community provides the tools and resources needed to confidently affirm and support LGBTQ+ children and individuals in their lives.
Dr. Lulu’s ultimate mission is youth advocacy. She emphasizes the importance of representation and support for Black gender-diverse youth, a community that faces disproportionate risks of homelessness, discrimination, and violence. She passionately calls for systemic changes in healthcare, education, and parenting practices to ensure that every child feels seen, valued, and loved.
Through her work, Dr. Lulu exemplifies courage, compassion, and a relentless drive to make the world a better place for LGBTQ+ children. Her appearance on the Rx for Success Podcast is an invitation to listeners to reflect on their own roles in fostering inclusivity and to take actionable steps toward becoming allies.
Dr. Lulu’s story is one of love and transformation. Whether you’re a parent seeking guidance, a healthcare professional looking to improve your practice, or simply someone who wants to make a difference, this episode is a must-listen.
